Huawei achieves new ‘world record’ 5G speed: How it surpassed Samsung and Qualcomm

On June 16, Turkcell (Istanbul), the leading mobile phone operator of Turkey, and Huawei announced that the companies had joinly broken a record by carrying out their first 5G mmWave [millimeter wave] speed test together in line with their respective network capabilities. In the test performed using real 5G equipment in the 71.5 - 73.5 GHz frequency band, the companies reported that a new speed record of 70 Gbps was reached. According to a press release, "In this regard, Turkcell has become one of the few mobile operators in the world that can reach a speed that is impossible with current technologies, using the technology of the future, 5G."

Huawei achieves new ‘world record’ 5G speed

Gediz Sezgin, Turkcell's general manager responsible for network technologies, added, "We achieved a first in Turkey by carrying out the first speed test using 5G equipment. The speed we have reached today and the record we have broken are a striking example of the progress we, as Turkcell, have made in 5G in a short period of time. With new technologies, Gigabit level data transmission, low latency and reliable performance, we will continue to provide innovative services and solutions to our customers by developing high efficiency and high-capacity solutions that we will achieve with 5G technologies."

Internet speeds around the world has gone up considerably in the last decade but scientists are still trying to improve it every day. With the roll out of 5G technology, the world will be entering a new era of internet speeds but researchers in Japan have achieved data transmission speeds that are almost 100,000 times faster than 5G. The Network Research Institute at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) claimed the world record by completing data transmission at an astonishing speed of 1.02 petabit (PB) per second. That roughly translated into 125,000 Gigabytes (GB) per second, and it can be transmitted over a distance of about over 51.7 km.

Turkcell and Huawei have created a new speed record when carrying out a 5G mmWave speed test. In the test performed using real 5G equipment in the 71.5 - 73.5 GHz frequency band, a new speed record was reached by reaching download speeds of 70 Gbps. The tests were carried out at Istanbul Turkcell Küçükyali Plaza.

Turkcell has become one of the few mobile operators in the world that can reach this speed with current 5G technologies. Along with Huawei, they plan to continue work on 5G technologies and intensify their joint R&D efforts.

The project was reportedly supported by a special government project on 6G and was achieved through collaboration with the telecom giants Fudan University and China Mobile. The speed achieved is a world record for real-time wireless transmission within the terahertz frequency band around 300GHz to 3THz, which is already considered to be the bedrock for the futuristic 6G mobile communications, based on the statement from Purple Mountain.

Atlas 900 is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) training cluster that was released by Huawei at HUAWEI CONNECT 2019. It has the world's fastest computing power of 256 to 1024 petaFLOPS (PFLOPS) FP16, equivalent to that of 500,000 PCs. Atlas 900 shattered the world record by completing the ResNet-50 ImageNet training in just 59.8 seconds. How fast is this? What are the major technological difficulties? How can Huawei possibly achieve this?

Every improvement in ImageNet training and every record broken represents an important breakthrough for AI. An ImageNet training task requires approximately 10 billion floating-point computations and takes a prolonged period of time to finish, even for the world's most powerful supercomputer. Huawei's Atlas 900 training cluster won the Tech of the Future Award for shortening the training time to under a minute.

CloudEngine series switches are used to build an intelligent lossless Ethernet network with zero packet loss. The Atlas 900 is made up of such Ethernet networks, which provides each AI server in the Atlas cluster with 8 x 100GE access capability. This achieves a 100 Tbit/s full-mesh, non-blocking dedicated parameter synchronization network with zero packet loss. The intelligent lossless DCN built based on the world's highest-density 400G CloudEngine16800 meets the requirement of zero packet loss, and supports large-scale 400GE network evolution. Overall, this ensures linear scale-out performance expansion in the future and continuous peak performance. In short, Huawei's intelligent lossless DCN achieves zero packet loss and equips Atlas 900 with the world's greatest computing power.

Samsung also achieved record-setting average downlink speeds of 1.75Gbps and uplink speeds of 61.5Mbps across a distance of 10km. The trial by Samsung and NBN utilized eight component carriers (8CC), which is an aggregation of 800MHz of mmWave spectrum. Samsung also reached a top downlink speed of 2.7Gbps over a 10km distance from the radio.

6G is the sixth generation of wireless technology. A 6G network follows up on 4G and 5G, using higher frequency bands and agile, cloud-based networking technology to deliver record-breaking speeds and microsecond latency.

The rocket bicycle has been designed by friend Arnold Neracher and can travel the quarter mile in less than 7 seconds reaching 0-60 in just 4.8 seconds and generating about 1.96 Gs worth of acceleration, check out the video below to see the world record-breaking attempt carried out. The Frenchman explained in an interview :

US 5G snapshot: Of the four major US carriers, Sprint had the most consistent coverage. Its use of sub-6 spectrum meant we could even run speed tests in the car, something that Verizon and AT&T's mmWave can't do. Both Verizon and AT&T offered far higher speeds, even if they largely remain elusive. Verizon has only launched in two cities but plans to be in 30 by the end of the year. T-Mobile's mmWave network didn't give us the highs we expected in congested Manhattan, but real-world download speeds were apparent. 2ff7e9595c
